Team Challenges - two examples...

Operation Construct

Two teams are based on two different sides of a river. One team has the responsibility of building a vehicle & one team builds a bridge in order to get the vehicle across the river. They are provided with a range of resources.

The Bridge Builders are provided with the specifications of a vehicle they need, they have to communicate these specifications to the vehicle builders. While the vehicle takes shape, there are certain attributes the bridge must have, to get the vehicle across safely. The vehicle builders have to get these specifications across to the bridge builders.
The two teams can only communicate via radio, so communication must be short and effective. The two teams also cannot see each other, as the vehicle builders have to design & construct the vehicle away from the river bank.
The goal is achieved, as soon as bridge and vehicle are built and the vehicle with each team member at a time crossed the river & reaches the destination.

Learning outcomes:

  • Planning and preparation, organising and dedicating roles and responsibilities
  • Effective communication within limited time
  • Working according to specifications
  • Identifying strengths and weaknesses within a team, using them productively
  • Motivation &increased team spirit through common achievement of the task
  • Understanding physics and mechanics of major constructions

Jigsaw Challenge

The team is challenged to retrieve as many jigsaw pieces as possible in order to form the “big picture” at the end of the day.
They will do that by completing certain activities, such as:

1. Completing an orienteering course type treasure hunt, to pick up little bags of jigsaw pieces from different locations until all are retrieved.

2. Taking part and achieving problem solving and teambuilding tasks, which are rewarded in jigsaw pieces.

3. Challenging themselves with outdoor activities, such as raft building, rock climbing etc.

Learning outcomes:

Each task focuses on different skills and outcomes, such as improving communication, trust, enhancing leadership skills and dedicating responsibilities as well as planning and organising complex tasks within a limited amount of time.

Finally we will discuss and transfer from the “Jigsaw” back to roles and responsibilities within a team, the achievement together as well as the importance of the individual.

The complexity of task specification, degree of challenge and intensity of review will be adapted to the group's needs and abilities.
